Organic agriculture and livestock present a production system that can be environmentally sustainable, while remaining economically profitable, offering healthy and high quality products. More and more extensive livestock farmers, a model close to the organic model, are interested in knowing the most important aspects that make up an organic livestock management. In this study a technical characterization of the extensive beef cattle farm of Los Ojuelos in La Campana (Seville), whose owner shows interest in organic livestock, through the collection of information and data taken during visits to the farm or provided by the farmer, as well as through observation of the activities of the farm, in order to develop a series of measures and proposals for conversion according to the rules of organic production. The characterization shows that the livestock farm of Los Ojuelos has a sustainable management, however the proposed measures can improve the operation of the farm, being more profitable and favorable for the environment and the animals produced
Andrological characteristics of tropical milking criollo bulls
ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the testicular and semen characteristics in Criollo Lechero Tropical (CLT) bulls in the subhumid Mexican tropics.
Design/methodology/approach: Eight bulls were included in the study and distributed in two groups: G1 (n=5): young bulls and G2 (n=3): adult bulls. All bulls were managed under grazing and were evaluated throughout one year. From each bull the following measurements were taken once a month: live weight, body condition score, scrotal circumference, and testicular width, length and volume. Semen was obtained every 3 months via artificial vagina. Semen variables evaluated in each collection were: aspect, volume, mass and individual motility, and sperm concentration and morphology.
Results: Live weight and testicular measurements increased linearly during the study in bulls from both groups. All bulls had scrotal circumference larger than the minimum threshold value for cattle and semen of high quality.
Study limitations/implications: The low availability of CLT bulls prevented the inclusion of a larger number of animals in the study. This low availability of animals makes it necessary to establish standard values for testicular measurements and semen characteristics in the CLT breed in order to select the best individuals as sires and contribute to its conservation.
Findings/conclusions:The CLT bulls had good scrotal circumference and semen quality since a young age and into adulthood. These traits make the CLT bulls an important alternative for livestock breeding in the tropics. Objective: To assess the testicular and semen characteristics in Criollo LecheroTropical (CLT) bulls in the subhumid Mexican tropics.Design/methodology/approach: Eight bulls were included in the study and distributedin two groups: G1 (n=5): young bulls and G2 (n=3): adult bulls.
This thesis was born with the intention of contributing to the modernization and
improvement of the competitiveness of the production system of the cooperative OVISO
S.C.L., working on the genetic basis of their animals. In general, sheep meat that
represents the cooperative grouping OVISO is characterized by a production based on the
indigenous Merino breed as maternal substrate and a great paternal genetic diversity, also
distributed over a broad base territory. This dispersion over the territory together with a
broad animal based genetic diversity translates into large flocks’ heterogeneity both in
terms of the genetic basis and the production system that they determine, in a great
heterogeneity of the products which is shown in the bait process, in which we find lambs
with different conversion rates, levels of fat, growth capability, formats etc., something
that hinders the commercialization of a homogeneous product, with the consequent
added-value loss.
For this reason, OVISO began to implement a plan of crossbred breeding in 2013
which standardised the entrance of genetics in purity on farms, and regulated the crosses
intended for the production of meat according to the criteria of productivity linked directly
to the profitability of the system. The program did bet by the Merino breed as maternal
base because of its high rusticity characteristics, good capacity of adaptation to different
environments, long period of sexual activity and good fertility; and exploiting their
complementarity and combining ability with a paternal basis selected for meat traits, from
some prococe breeds (Ile de France, Merino Precoce, Berrichon du Cher, Fleischschaf...
among others). Therefore, the neat goal of obtaining an improved Lamb (F1) through
crossbreeding as a commercial product derived from parents bred in purity, both for its
additive component and for its ability to crossbreeding. The program establishes a
classification of flocks of the cooperative in three layers, the first of which is the selective
one, where local elite flocks of Merino and precoce breeds are subjected to functional and
parentage controls and their farms are genetically connected through artificial
insemination. A second layer of multiplication, is formed by farms dedicated to produce
replacement animals in purity and at a large scale, both for the Merina maternal base, and
precoce sires. Finally, a great productive stratum of farms dedicated to obtaining
homogeneous commercial and improved F1 lambs, from crossbreeding Merino females
and precoce sires.
The works included in this doctoral thesis are presented in research and
development objectives with the aim to provide the breeding program and genetic
improvement of OVISO with scientific basis. To this end, we have developed the study
in five phases corresponding to five chapters; In the first phase we have analyzed the
genetic diversity, genetic structure and genetic relationships existing among a group of
merino farms and these with other breeds of the same ovine species using microsatellite
genetic markers. In a second phase, the non-genetic effects affecting the growth of lambs
were assessed; in a third phase, the curves of growth from the birth to the entrance to
feedlot of the three populations of majoritary lambs in the cooperative Group (Merinos,
Fleischschaf and crosbred). A fourth phase based on the fundamentals of quantitative
genetics that focused on the realization of the first genetic evaluation and the calculation of genetic trends of the population, as well as in obtaining genetic parameters. We
finished with a fifth phase focused on genomic tools, where the implementation of the
techniques of selection assisted by markers was initiated, carrying out a study of
association between phenotypic data (weights-ages of merino lambs) with the SNPs'
paternal genotypes related to the genes linked to growth and meat quality traits
The present research work entitled "Evaluation of the fertility through devices Intravaginales (progestogen - EB) in bovine meat, in the Region of San Martín",It was intended to: evaluate the reproductive intravaginal devices (progestogen-EB) efficiency, when comparing two protocols to Artificial insemination to fixed time (IATF) with progesterone (P4) - benzoate (EB) estradiol and prostaglandin (PGF2α) in bovine animals of meat in the Region San Martín; evaluating the time fixed percentage of pregnancy by Artificial insemination and Artificial insemination to natural mating. The components studied were: race, estrogen and progesterone, prostaglandin. The results obtained indicate that: regardless of the percentage of pregnancy (zeal artificial or natural) these were statistically equal among themselves. While physiologically all processes that occur naturally are the best results with a yield of 80% of pregnancy, at the time of the election of the best treatment, to increase reproductive efficiency in the cattle herd, should take into account the advantages of implementing protocols of synchronization of jealousy, having more homogeneous calves at the time of weaning significantly increase the head of calving, etc., in this project demonstrated that estrus synchronization protocol, obtained better results in cows with 70% gestation and 50% of gestation in heifers. being able to manage, fewer. Key words: progestogens - EB; Beef cattle; Artificial insemination in time fixed; Estradiol benzoate; Prostaglandin; Artificial insemination with natural zeal.Tesi
